Not a bad read. The premise is that Jesse comes back to life when she dies, and apparently people who have this syndrome can actually die for someone else, once each person. The basic story is fairly predictable - when does the bad guy ever really win, after all? - but beyond the story of the characters, it also delves into the politics and prejudices of society. I also like the little details the author puts in about Jesse's day to day life, like waking up stiff and looking horrible because she's been a corpse for anywhere from a few hours to several days. Shrum thought things through pretty well, and there's not a lot of deus ex machine. People do things according to their abilities and character. Worth a try. I'd give more stars, but Jesse herself seems a bit shallow, especially compared to the rest of the characters, which is kind of odd. Usually the main character is most carefully drawn.Product details

This entire series is totally different that anything I've ever read before. Interesting concept, but I'm glad it 's not real life.
The characters are well written and the excitement keeps coming. The story has enough twists and turns to keep anyone engrossed in the book. The author does a great job of pulling the reader into the story.
I really like this storyline and this series. I do listen to it while I am driving, so it makes the drive much more painless. The characters are interesting and well-developed. I don't find myself snickering at any absurdities that occur with the characters that can occur in some stories where you think "really?" LOL
What can I say, it was a great read! I originally found you through Roquet I've gone to love your writing style just as much. Can't wait to get the next book and start right away!!
Jesse Sullivan is a "death replacement agent", which means she can step in at the moment of death and die for another person, giving them a chance to go on living. Jesse then comes back to life, heals her wounds and is ready to go again. But someone is killing people like Jesse, and she is determined to find out who and why.
This basic premise was exploited to great effect in the first Jesse Sullivan novel, "Dying for a Living", and "Dying by the Hour" picks up right where that book left off. We continue to learn about Jesse's abilities, and learn more about her past. Mysteries introduced in the first book are expanded upon here, and we learn more about the big picture of what is going on with Jesse and other replacement agents.
This book is a real page-turner that I finished all too quickly. If you enjoy a book that is inventive, original and difficult to put down, then "Dying by the Hour" is for you. But please, if you haven't read the first book, buy them both to read one after the other. You won't be sorry.
Unlike the previous installment, this book switches between Jesse's and Ally's perspective. I thought it was very effective since though Ally was pretty important in book 1, she was mostly a guest-starring character (at least I definitely wanted more scenes with her). It also helps keep the strong bond between Jesse and Ally on the reader's mind despite not having many scenes together and despite Jesse still being with Lane.
It was also very nice to just get to know Ally better because gee whiz Lane who. Not that the relationship between Jesse and Lane feels forced or contrived just that Ally injects a lot of heart into the story.
Down-sides the story was a bit harder to follow as the world-building becomes more complex. Also somewhat contradictory, there was a little too much re-hashing which is more of a problem now than when you would have had to wait for the next installment to come out.
All that being said I plan to continue with book 3 in T minus 10 minutes.

In "Dying for a Living" author Kory Shrum introduced us to Jesse who, because of a quirk in her genetic makeup, can - literally - come back from the dead. She's one of a handful of people - roughly 2 percent of the population - that can do this and for several years she was a federal death replacement agent. In effect, she got paid to die so that others might live.
Then something went wrong. Around the country other men and women like her were being murdered in such a way that they were not able to return to the living.
Thousands of them, in fact.
And Jesse, trapped by religious fanatics and a high-class escort whose daughter had been kidnapped, was next on the list.
She escaped but she knows that she is not safe.
Might never be safe, in fact, unless the killers are caught.
In "Dying by the Hour" Shrum continues Jesse's story and it is every bit as good as the first installment in the diminutive heroine's saga.
In fact, it may even be better.
In "Dying for a Living" Jesse is in love with two people Lane, a hunky guy with a streak of bad boy in him, and Ally, her childhood girlfriend who now works as her assistant. She's going to have to choose one over the other at some point and in "Dying by the Hour" she has made that choice. This gives Shrum an opportunity to delve deeply into the emotional lives of both Jesse and Ally and she does it with a deft touch. What could have been a sappy romance is, in Shrum's hands, a story of the sacrifices you make for those you love and the price you pay for making those sacrifices.
"Dying by the Hour" is not just a story about lovers and sacrifice, however.
Far from it This is a crackling good adventure story complete with gunfights, kidnappings, hand-to-hand combat and enough psychotic characters to fill the average asylum. If you like action, you'll certainly find it in "Dying by the Hour."
Shrum is an excellent storyteller with a firm command of the language and a strong narrative sense. Her characters are finely drawn and her plotting is seamless. She sets a scene without a lot of superfluous description and, as a result, puts the reader in the moment without slowing down the narrative with useless details.
And, just as she did in her first novel, Shrum ends this book leaving her readers wondering what happens next.
Personally, I can't wait to find out.
